Letter from Pat Clements re: Road and Transportation System for Vancouver Island

Subject: To plan the road and transportation system for southern Vancouver Island for the next 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 years.

ll think it will be beneficial to all if we develop a plan for the future road and transportation system for our area.

The road work being done on the Malahat is great and should continue , but the Malahat will never be a main modern highway for Vancouver Island.

A proper highway and transportation system will be required for this area to service the population and business growth of the future.

Highway 17, the Pat Bay highway needs improved. It will have to be 6 lanes with proper overpasses to handle the growing population and ferry traffic.

This plus the building of a bridge from lands end road area to Salt Spring Island and then a new highway along the west side of Salt Spring Island , with another bridge from Salt Spring Island across the narrows back to Vancouver Island and from there a highway going north ,staying east of Duncan and then connecting to the existing island highway.

This plan will give Victoria two road access instead of just one.

The benefits would be a improved Pat Bay highway , reduced ferries to Salt Spring Island, allow the Malahay area to grow as it is doing now and by pass the Duncan bottle neck.

As the road on Salt spring Island can be built at a lower elevation than the Malahat it would reduce having to drive up hill , into higher elevations during bad weather.
