PURPOSE OF REPORT:
To advise Mayor and Council of the results of the Canada 150 Street Banner Contest held earlier this year.
BACKGROUND:
At the February 21, 2017 Council meeting the following motion was passed:
THAT the Town’s Canada 150 events be a Heritage Day event at Craigflower Manor; street light banner contest; and the commission of a Canada 150 beer by the Four Mile Brew Pub. (C-20-17)
Accordingly, staff contacted the three schools in View Royal – Eagle View Elementary, Shoreline Middle School and View Royal Elementary – regarding the Canada 150 Street Banner Contest with the goal of selecting a unique design from each school for the celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday.
DISCUSSION:
Due to the short time frame, only Eagle View Elementary submitted entries and it was decided that winning submissions would be selected from each of the four classes that entered. From these classes, over 90 excellent entries were received. Council, advisory committee members, Archives volunteers and staff members were invited to vote on their preferred choices from each class.
At the time of writing this report, the selected banner designs are in fabrication and, once completed, and will be displayed on Island Highway between Four Mile Trestle and Stormont Road (10 median poles, 2 banners per pole); Island Highway from the Colwood border to Parsons Bridge on the south side (11 poles, 2 banners per pole); Island Highway at the Fire Hall (2 poles, 2 banners per pole); and Helmcken Road from Island Highway to Parkcrest Drive (3 median poles, 2 banners per pole). As well, the banners will be displayed in Town Hall.
Each winning artist will receive a finished banner with their design, a certificate of achievement and a View Royal pin.
