Dear Mayor and Councillors:

The Gorge Swim Fest Society (GSFS) understands that the slide from Newstead Park in View Royal is being surplus.

The attached letter is intended to explain how the slide will support the GSFS vision "To promote & enable health, awareness & vitality of the Gorge."

If you could have the appropriate people contact us to discuss this it would be greatly appreciated.

Yours truly,

Jack Meredith, P.Eng. LEED Fellow Emeritus

RE: View Royal Parks Newstead Park Slide

January 12, 2017

Mayor and Council, Town of View Royal, 45 View Royal Avenue, Victoria, BC, V9B 1A6

Dear Mayor and Councilors:

RE: View Royal Parks Newstead Park Slide

The Gorge Swim Fest Society (GSFS) understands that the slide from Newstead Park is being replaced and we are keenly interested in acquiring it when it becomes surplus. While we appreciate it no longer is suitable as a land-based apparatus, we feel it is perfectly suited for a water slide float in the Gorge Waterway. As such, we would like to include the slide in the planned upgrading of the dock and swimming infrastructure at Banfield Park in Vic West. We think the slide would add a fun aspect to the Victoria West Neighbourhood Plan that is currently being developed.

The GSFS vision is “To promote & enable swimming in the Gorge Waterway by supporting initiatives that sustain the health, awareness & vitality of the Gorge.” We feel having this slide would directly support this vision by increasing both awareness and use of the Gorge Waterway as the cleanest, warmest and closest open water swimming hole in Victoria. We believe the Gorge Waterway would be an ideal location for a water slide!

The GSFS has operated for 5 years, and our annual festival attracts ever-increasing numbers from all over the region. The float and water slide would be a major attraction, similar to the very popular one at Vancouver’s English Bay. With the City’s assistance, we expect the float design will also be multi-purpose, allowing paddlers and rowers from all jurisdictions to stop by and still enjoy their adventures in a whole new fun way!

Needless to say, we’d be happy to add a ‘donation plaque’ recognizing View Royal’s contribution to a regional amenity. We would also invite Council to have the honorary ‘first slide’ at our grand opening!

Please direct staff to work with our society. We can take possession whenever it meets View Royal’s schedule.

Many thanks for your consideration and assistance.

Jack Meredith, P.Eng, LEED Fellow Emeritus President, Gorge Swim Fest Society
