Letter from a 60-year resident urging Council to reject the Christie Point redevelopment proposal to preserve community nature.

Dear Mayor and Council of the Town of View Royal,
I’m writing in regard to the proposed re-development of Christie Point. I commend you for your efforts to make the View Royal community aware of this proposal and to receive input from the electorate. My major concern is the apparent implication that the Council is involved in a balancing act between the citizens of View Royal and a corporate land developer.
Council has been elected to represent the wishes of the community. The only duty which the Council owes to the developer is to act with integrity on behalf of both parties. There is in place a community plan which speaks to the type of community preferred by the electorate. Many details have been pointed out indicating how this proposed development detracts from this intention. I would suggest that the intent of the developer is primarily to make a profit.
I fail to see how the Council is serving the community by allowing changes to the community plan simply to enhance the profitability of the developer’s bottom line. This proposed development, if completed, would dramatically change the nature of our community. Most of these changes have already been pointed out to Council.
I urge you to reconsider where your prime responsibility lies, and help to preserve the livability of View Royal which you have so admirably done to date. Money is important, but not at the expense of life style adequately supported by our current View Royal Community Plan.
Respectfully submitted,
W. A. “Bud” Buchan,
66 Kingham Place,
(60-year resident of View Royal)
