Hello municipal GWI partners,

One of the ideas that gets brought up at the GWI now and then is the restoration of the multiple public road ends along the Gorge and Portage Inlet. Many of these are either covered with blackberries and ivy, and/or are used by neighbours as garden waste dumping sites. An opportunity to address this has come up through the Green Shores program.

As you know, the CRD Harbours & Watersheds Program participates in the Green Shores Local Government Working Group along with several other local governments around the Salish Sea. DG Blair, Executive Director at the Stewardship Centre for BC which manages the Green Shores program, is applying for funding through the Coastal Restoration Fund for 2 coastal restoration projects in the region and asked us if we had a project that might be suitable. The other project under consideration is the K’ómoks estuary in Courtnay (former sawmill site). We thought road end right-of-way restoration might be a good project that addresses problems in all waterway jurisdictions, help increase the tree cover and habitat value at a series of sites and require little maintenance once complete. There is emphasis in this grant fund for restoration that improves fish habitat.

I just wanted to give you a heads-up about this, and if the initial Expression of Interest is accepted and SCBC is asked to submit a full proposal, we will contact you further for consultation about particular sites in your municipality and other details for the proposal submission. I hope you’re on board with this project idea, but of course if not we’ll make sure your municipality is not mentioned. Please let me know ASAP if you do not want to participate in this.
