TOWN OF VIEW ROYAL Council Report
TO: Council DATE: June 30, 2020 FROM: L. Chase, Dir. Dev. Services MEETING DATE: July 7, 2020
Pacific Opera Victoria – Pop Up Performances in View Royal
RECOMMENDATION:
THAT Council receive the report from the Director of Development Services regarding “Pacific Opera Performances in View Royal” for information.
CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER’S COMMENTS:
I concur with the recommendation.
PURPOSE OF REPORT:
To provide an update to Council regarding Pacific Opera Victoria programming in View Royal.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:
As described in the February 2020 CAO Update, staff had previously been approached by Pacific Opera Victoria about locations for “40 Days of Opera”—a summer program that would have seen opera performances in various locations across the region. With the new pandemic protocols, the larger productions are no longer feasible.
Pacific Opera Victoria has modified their proposal and will instead be doing pop up performances in View Royal and other communities in various locations. The performances will be short and sweet—with the intention to delight anyone who happens to be passing by.
The proposal at this time is for the following dates:
- Thursday July 9th, from 3-5 pm
- Saturday, July 18th, from 2-4
- Sunday, July 26th, from 2-4
- Tuesday, August 4th, from 3-5
- Thursday, August 20th, from 3-5
Performances will likely be in View Royal Park, Portage Park and Chancellor Park and park permits have been granted for these events.
Communications confirming locations and times will be through Pacific Opera Victoria shortly before performances. Their website provides the following details (https://pacificopera.ca/event/popup-opera/):
“Opera Takes to the Streets Opera Singers are jumping in a hybrid-electric van and taking opera to the streets. All summer singers from Pacific Opera will be travelling and performing in public spaces throughout the Capital Regional District four days per week – Saturday, Sunday and two weekdays.
Pop Up Opera features one or two singers accompanied by recorded tracks created by pianist Robert Holliston. Each day the singer(s) will pop up in 8 or 10 spots for 10 minutes of music. Pop Up Operas will take place in neighbourhoods, on street corners, in parks, and outside retirement residences and care facilities.
One location that allows for easy access and social distancing will be announced online each performance day. Check this page – or Pacific Opera’s Social Media or email paul@pacificopera.ca for daily details.”
It is hoped that View Royal residents in our parks at the time will enjoy these small events over the coming weeks.
RECOMMENDATION:
