a) View Royal Parks and Trails Map Update
The Committee and the Planner discussed potential amendments to the Parks and Trails Map as follows:
- map with shadows showing relief is preferable to the flat map;
- closed roads should be changed to ‘public green space’ or similar;
- remove the boot symbol from the map, as it is redundant information;
- change green walking loop to grey on the on-road portions;
- number the walking loops and major parks for reference on the reverse of the map;
- make regional pathways stand out more;
- retain property lines, most prefer them in the final print size for the map and can assist in wayfinding;
- add Cole Island and the dock facility;
- add the pedestrian cut-through paths (‘snickets’) to the map;
- add walking loop distances;
- add solid, clear white backgrounds for the legends to make it easier to read;
- explore the idea of removing the shading from outside the View Royal boundaries;
- explore the idea of rating walking loop and trail difficulties – green, blue, black, double black, red etc.;
- tree silhouette on the reverse side is nice to have;
- preference for the wavy-shape design on the reverse, with the exception of the park table being slightly smaller; and
- add the View Royal Park bike park (staff suggests adding a Coming in 2019 annotation).
The Planner will send the map to other members of Council and will provide amended maps to members of the Committee for final feedback and comments.
b) Heddle Trail Discussion – I. Brown
The Committee discussed: a) the possibility of having volunteers build a trail from Heddle Avenue to Prince Robert Drive; b) the potential use of volunteer labour to check for survey markers; and c) the need for prior approval from the Town to undertake this currently unbudgeted project.
