Evaluation of the Event

This was the fourth annual West Shore Indigenous People’s Day Festival. We had a record number of attendees with more than 2,000 people attending. Last year we had just over 1,000 people attend. The first year we had 100. It has doubled in size each year and the community support grows each year.

Before this festival was founded there was no large community celebration on the West Shore for National Aboriginal Day, June 21, now officially called National Indigenous People’s Day.

The festival is open to everyone and we remove barriers include financial barriers by offering everything for free including food, entertainment and activities for the entire community. The event is hosted by eight Aboriginal-serving agencies. Schools from School District 61 and 62 sent bus loads of children. Each year at least 10 First Nations attend. We host this public event in the spirit of reconciliation.

Evaluation of the direct and indirect benefit to the Town of View Royal

M’akola provides affordable housing on the West Shore, across the Island and BC.

While don’t offer housing in View Royal, we do host many community events in the spirit of reconciliation. Residents of View Royal and members of Songhees and Esquimalt Nations attended, performed and participated in our event.

The event was hosted West Shore Parks and Recreation, which the Town of View Royal is a partial owner.

Residents of View Royal help organize the festival and attend the festival. Children from Craigflower Elementary and Shoreline Middle Schools were bussed to the event. Both schools are in View Royal and serve View Royal residents.

We would like to thank the Town of View Royal for its support and helping us make this event possible.
