Letter from the Insurance Bureau of Canada promoting a portable earthquake simulator event in View Royal and Colwood.

Mayor David Screech View Royal Town Hall 45 View Royal Avenue Victoria, BC V9B 1A6
Dear Mayor Screech:
For the third summer in a row, Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is partnering with municipalities across southwestern British Columbia to help individuals prepare for an earthquake by having them experience what it actually feels like to be caught in one.
The IBC ShakeZone Tour invites residents to step inside a portable earthquake simulator to experience what an 8.0 magnitude event really feels like. Experts tell us that there is a 30% chance that a significant earthquake will strike southwestern British Columbia sometime in the next 50 years. The IBC ShakeZone is a safe way to demonstrate why individuals need to prepare now for such a disaster, and we hope you can join us on September 14 when IBC partners with View Royal and Colwood to bring the ShakeZone Tour to your community. Details of the event are below:

A major earthquake in BC would cause significant harm and would disrupt economic activity right across the country. I have enclosed more information on the impact such an event would have, and hope you will join IBC in raising awareness of the need to better prepare both physically and financially.
We hope to see you at View Royal and Colwood’s ShakeZone event where, together, we will foster a culture of earthquake awareness, personal preparedness, and disaster resilience in the community.
Sincerely,
Aaron Sutherland
