Mayor and Council Town of View Royal 45 View Royal Ave. Victoria, B.C. V9B 1A6
Dear Mayor and Council:
I write to congratulate you on developing a policy for electric vehicle charging stations as described in the report to the Committee of the Whole on May 1. This development will move the Town seriously forward in its attempt to reduce global warming and it will serve as an example for citizens to take their own action to reduce global warming. I urge you to proceed with activating the work as soon as possible.
When you do move into action I suggest you ask the engineering department to shop around for level 2 chargers. I do know one View Royal citizen who bought and had professionally installed a level 2 charger for a total of $1500 for materials and labour.
I also suggest you might consider, when buying an electric vehicle for the Town, the lifetime cost of the vehicle, since these are much cheaper to fuel and maintain than gas and diesel vehicles. Even if such were a bit more expensive over their lifetime, perhaps the difference would be considered by the Town as a municipal contribution to alleviating global warming, rather than externalizing this cost over the whole world in terms of greenhouse gases. Except for vehicles that travel more than 150 km per day, the Town could surely use electric only vehicles rather than the more expensive hybrids.
Again, thank you for moving us firmly into the 21st century. I look to more good work of this kind in the future.
Sincerely,
Ian D. Brown
