Re: 275 Kerwood Street: Progress Report Site Alteration Permit: 2015-0162
The Archaeology Branch has reviewed the above report that was prepared by Millennia Research Limited under Permit 2015-0162.
We concur with the findings and provide the following specific responses to the recommendations regarding continuation of the project development within the parameters of Permit 2015-0162 provided the boundaries remain unchanged:
Aside from the demolition of the existing house, no ground alterations should be conducted within the existing archaeological site boundary. Archaeological testing or mitigation of cultural deposits would likely be required if landscaping or other ground alteration is proposed. The Archaeology Branch concurs with this recommendation.
Avoidance of the area on the eastern side of the walkway between it and the property line. If ground disturbing activities, such as underground utilities and landscaping are planned, data recovery through evaluative testing (1m x 1m units) is advised. If possible, utilities could be placed above ground or within the disturbed cultural sediments below the sod. The Archaeology Branch concurs with this recommendation.
Monitoring of the house demolition by a professional archaeologist within the mapped boundaries of DcRu-62. The boundary of DcRu-0062 covers the southern portion of the existing house, and as a result of the positive test immediately to the east, possibly also the eastern portion. Therefore, demolition of the entire house foundation (only) will need to be monitored by a qualified archaeologist.
If, during monitoring, significantly different cultural deposits are encountered than anticipated, the mitigation plan should be revised in consultation with the Archaeology Branch. The Archaeology Branch concurs with this recommendation.
Mitigation data recovery should be conducted in accordance with permit conditions if intact cultural deposits are encountered and cannot be avoided. The Archaeology Branch concurs with this recommendation.
