Details of Item to be Added: In May, Council discussed contracting for the Urban Forestry Strategy. The objectives of the project include monitoring tree canopy and developing strategies to mitigate loss. These objectives are valuable, however, this work will take significant time to complete and in the meantime more can be done to protect trees. We have seen recently the removal of trees as part of large scale developments, which while not all protected species, provided shade and helped with cooling. I will be proposing that staff identify quick changes to our tree bylaw to protect more trees, including non-protected species, specifically as part of development or building permitting.
