Recommended Basic Interceptor Maintenance Procedures

Maintenance:

1. Immediately following construction, the interceptor should be cleaned as there is normally a large quantity of “construction” waste trapped in the units.
2. Initially the Interceptor should be checked regularly (the definition of regular will be determined by the amount of pollutants expected) to determine a maintenance frequency. This frequency should be increased if the interceptor is filling with pollutants before the next inspection period. With a regular maintenance schedule a pattern should develop to enable you to determine how often maintenance is required specific to your application. Cleaning should be done when the unit has accumulated between 10-15% of its capacity.
3. If required, the inlet area should be cleaned as follows: a. Remove cover or open lids as appropriate. b. Remove the water/oil from the vault. * c. Remove any sludge accumulation. Note sludge quantity and position.*

*Provide a vacuum truck or other means of disposing of the sludge and dirt in the vessel. Pollutants should be disposed of according to local regulations. Oil must be treated as a “special waste” and must go to the appropriate facility. Sludge is normally treated as catchbasin waste.
