FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION REPORT: TERRITORIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT POLICY #0100-052
A report recommending the formal adoption of a policy for providing territorial acknowledgements at the start of certain municipal meetings.
TOWN OF VIEW ROYAL FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION REPORT
TO: Committee of the Whole DATE: January 29, 2021 FROM: S. Jones, Corp. Officer MEETING DATE: February 9, 2021
TERRITORIAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT POLICY #0100-052
RECOMMENDATION:
THAT the Committee recommend to Council that Territorial Acknowledgement Policy #0100-052 be approved.
CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER’S COMMENTS:
I concur with the recommendation.
PURPOSE OF REPORT:
To provide Council with a territorial acknowledgement policy for consideration of approval.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:
The Town’s 2019-2022 Strategic Plan – Good Governance section – includes a work plan item to both develop an acknowledgement of traditional territories and a policy regarding its use.
The first territorial acknowledgement at a View Royal Council meeting was made on September 8, 2020 and at a Committee of the Whole meeting on September 15, 2020 with the practice continuing to today.
With a view to preserving the significance of the recognition and to avoid becoming perfunctory, early discussions by Council of this item indicated that the Town would not include a territorial acknowledgement at all meetings, only meetings of Council (regular Council meetings and Committee of the Whole meetings). The policy attached (see Attachment “A”) confirms this direction and provides various acknowledgement statements that may be used by the presiding member (chair).
RECOMMENDATION:
THAT the Committee recommend to Council that Territorial Acknowledgement Policy #0100-052 be approved.
