Subject: Chilco Park Off-Leash Dog Park Proposal

Dear Mayor and View Royal Council,

I am opposed to the development of an off-leash area (‘dog park’) within Chilco Park.

Chilco Park is a popular, well used, multi-use green space in View Royal and it makes no practical sense to segregate out single-use areas within it. Objectively, the current areas proposed (designated as Areas A and B in a View Royal survey recently circulated) only provide about 400m2 of play area each and neither area provides any shade for overheated dogs. Further, if a dog park were created it would result in increased traffic circulation with resultant parking limitations – Currently, the intra-residential area around the park is designated as Residential Parking only. Any dog owners arriving by car would be solely limited to the 4 dedicated guest parking spots on Cahility Lane at the Northwest corner of the park. Additionally, there are no public washroom facilities for anyone not residing in the immediate area surrounding Chilco Park.

The unique charm of Chilco Park has always been the combined community interaction among all residents (dog owners or not). A segregated off-leash would detrimentally change this.

For your consideration.
