1. What is asset management (AM)
- AM is a process focused on sustainable service delivery.
- AM supports the delivery of services that assets provide throughout their entire lifecycle, from creation, acquisition, maintenance, operation, rehabilitation, through to replacement.

AM is four core elements:
- Asset
- Information
- Finances
- People
AM is three ongoing activities:
- Communicating
- Engaging
- Reviewing
The AM process is three repeating stages:
- Assessing
- Planning
- Implementing

2. Why is asset management important?
- A few of the many reasons:
- Awareness of purpose under the Community Charter
- Reliance on external funding
- Tolerance to risk
- Other reasons:
- Understand lifecycle cost
- Coordinated departmental efforts
- Continual improvement of business processes
Tolerance to risk
AM offers a methodical approach to risk management. Much of the advancement of the asset management discipline across the globe has come as a response to acute and impending crises.

Purpose of the municipality in the Community Charter
To provide services and laws, provide stewardship of public assets, and foster the economic, social and environmental well-being of its community.
