I am writing this letter on behalf of my clients Judy Hasiuk and Lee Jeffs of 212 Shadow Ridge Place, telephone (250)479-3299. In regards to 2 Douglas Fir Trees which are situated in the rear yard of the property. The two trees concerning have a DBH of 76cm and 78cm. My clients would like to remove both trees due to their concerns of limb or complete tree failure. After my visit to the property my attention was drawn primarily to the 76cm tree which appears to be exhibiting signs of root disease. Upon my initial inspection I noticed firstly a flat side at the base of the tree (Fig#1). My second observation was approximately 2m from the soil level (Fig#2) which appeared to be an old injury to the trunk which quite possibly could be wire fencing embedded in the tree. After looking further up the trunk of the tree there are noticeable discolorations and very visible signs of Resinosis (Fig #3). The tree does have a significant lean towards the house (Fig #4). My recommendation is to remove this tree and dispose of the wood from the site as fungus can remain active for many years depending on the strain possibly reintroducing into currently healthy trees. I would also suggest the grinding of the stump and large surface roots. The second tree with the 78 cm DBH upon visual inspection appears to be of reasonable health and shows no signs of disease or discoloration of foliage, however the canopy as shown in (Fig #5) is extremely heavy on one side and the trunk already has a slight lean in that direction (Fig #6). My clients feel that a removal of this tree will negate any risk of injury or property damage to the neighbour . If the opinion of the town is that the tree shall remain I will recommend that some of the longer extending branches towards the neighboring property be removed and a light thinning of the remaining canopy takes place.
