Letter from Phil Devonshire opposing the solid barrier option for traffic management on Rudyard Road.

Options for Rudyard

The issue of people cutting through Rudyard and up Stormont to the Island Highway in the mornings has been a constant problem for its residents.

The issue was once again raised at Council with a petition that had been circulated to all of the 120 residences affected requesting a gate that would be lowered for the period 6:30 to 8:15 AM only. The residents' presentation included points such as that the gate would not interfere with emergency vehicles (they would be able to trip the gate in the same manner as they presently do stoplights). As a result of this presentation Council requested that staff prepare a report which was presented to Council on January 17, 2017.

Council's choice from the report was to erect a solid barrier in the middle of Helmcken at Rudyard to stop all traffic coming from the direction of the hospital from making a left turn onto Rudyard. This would be very inconvenient for all the residents of the Glenairlie Precinct, and would not only affect the morning hours but would stop traffic 24 hours a day.

Of all the options, I feel this is the worst one.

I would ask if you would sign this petition against this option.

The idea of an electronic gate at Rudyard or a camera taking license numbers and issuing fines are two options which were not presented at the last survey done in 2015 and if they had been included might have been acceptable. All options at the time could not be agreed to by all. The petition that was presented regarding the gate showed that this would be an acceptable option to the neighbourhood.

If you can suggest another solution to this problem, please add it in the comment column.

Thank you for your input.
