Support for the Installation of Dock Facilities on Portage Inlet

We would like to express our support for the installation of dock facilities on Portage Inlet.

Over the years our Town has focused on connecting our neighbourhoods. As a result, View Royal now boasts a network of walking paths and bike lanes that has provided residents with the incentive and an alternative means to travel safely throughout our community.

But View Royal's biggest asset – our two marine areas, have yet to unify.

We view Portage Inlet and Esquimalt Harbour as part of an aquatic park system. As residents take to the water to recreate and explore, we believe an improved passage would give them more opportunity to enjoy the wildlife, culture and historic sites of these beautiful areas. There also exists an important social aspect. We live on the water and we have met many neighbours while out paddling, many of whom we've become good friends with over the years. One of the joys of summer has always been meeting the interesting people who happen by our dock and stop for a chat.

A paddle and portage wilderness experience, so close to a major city would also provide unique experience for visitors and eco tourists and encourage “staycations” as families explore the waterways in their backyard and spend time and money in their home town.

The idea of connecting the two waterways has been discussed for decades. Now, an innovative solution has presented itself. We’re aware that there are cost considerations, but if realized, it will encourage social, economic and safety returns that will benefit our Town well into the future. Let’s make this our legacy.
