A development variance permit was approved for 498 Island Highway, allowing an electronic changeable sign, subject to light and timing restrictions registered on title.
"The applicant sought to replace an outdated sign with modern electronic technology, which also required a variance for increased height. Concerns were raised by Council regarding traffic safety (due to the high collision rate at the Six Mile Road intersection), potential light pollution for nearby residential strata residents (300 Six Mile Road), and setting a precedent for 'moving digital signs' in the community. Staff assured that the sign size was not changing and recommended conditions including a legal agreement registered on title to control display brightness and restrict change intervals to a minimum of 30 seconds. Council was informed that DVP cannot be approved with a trial period. The application was approved narrowly."

Council received a report on a variance application for a digital sign at 498 Island Highway, expressing caution about potential light pollution and distractions.
"The application sought variances for sign height (7m vs 4.5m) and use of a prohibited electronic changeable sign capable of displaying graphics/video. Staff did not support the sign type due to potential light pollution and regulatory difficulties (controlling brightness, change frequency). Council debated allowing digital signs as a modernization step, suggesting that strict conditions on luminance and change frequency might be required to mitigate neighbor concerns (condos across the street)."
